Update: trends in AIDS incidence, deaths, and prevalence - United States, 1996
Article Abstract:
The number of people with AIDS has increased partly due to a drop in the death rate and a drop in the incidence of opportunistic infections. As of Jun, 1996, 223,000 US residents 13 or older had AIDS, a 10% increase since mid-1995. A total of 68,473 new cases of AIDS were reported in 1996, a 47% increase since 1992. However, death rates dropped between Jan-Jun, 1996 compared to the same period the year before. The only exception was the death rate in women, which rose 3%. HIV infection is still the leading cause of death in people between 25 and 44 years of age.
