Acquired syphilis in adults
Article Abstract:
Syphilis is a sexually transmitted disease that was a major public health problem during the early 20th century, but by the 1950s was relatively uncommon. The number of cases of syphilis among heterosexual men and women has increased since 1985, and has been associated with the use of 'crack' cocaine. Most patients with syphilis are diagnosed using blood tests to detect an immune response to the bacterium Treponema pallidum subspecies pallidum, the bacterium that causes syphilis. Syphilis is usually contracted by contact with infectious lesions during sexual activity. There are three stages of syphilis; primary, secondary and tertiary. Syphilis can spread to cerebrospinal fluid and cause neurosyphilis. The most effective treatment for syphilis is penicillin. Patients with neurosyphilis may be treated with a combination of penicillin and oral probenecid. Individuals with syphilis may have a higher risk of becoming infected with HIV than the general population.
