Postpartum cerebral vasospasm treated with hypervolemic therapy
Article Abstract:
Postpartum headaches and seizures may be caused by contraction of blood vessels in the brain. A 23-year-old woman experienced severe headaches and two seizures seven days after delivery. An electroencephalogram (EEG) showed abnormal activity in the left temporal area, and she was treated with phenytoin and acyclovir. A few days later she was rehospitalized and treated with intravenous saline and protein and with nimodipine and phenytoin. She was diagnosed with vasospasms in the brain, a rare complication of pregnancy, after magnetic resonance angiography showed constricted brain arteries. The condition ended on its own several months later.

"Estrophasic" dosing: a new concept in oral contraceptive therapy
Article Abstract:
An estrophasic oral contraceptive sold under the trade name Estrostep appears to provide adequate contraception with few side effects. This contraceptive maintains a constant level of synthetic progesterone while increasing the dose of estrogen throughout the cycle. This differs from most contraceptives, which use a constant estrogen dose while increasing the dose of synthetic progesterone. Estrostep contains one milligram of synthetic progesterone, and the dose of estrogen starts at 20 micrograms and increases to 35 micrograms by the end of the cycle. This dose is low enough to avoid the adverse effects of estrogen.
