Acute reactions to drugs of abuse
Article Abstract:
There is new information on some toxic reactions to drugs of abuse. There are many ways to take cocaine that can cause a prompt, very brief toxic episode. Cocaine constricts the arteries of the heart and can cause seizures, strokes, and heart attacks. Treatment is limited to controlling excess body heat, irregular heart beat, and high blood pressure. Amphetamine toxicity is similar but lasts longer. Ammonium chloride can acidify the urine to help eliminate the drug. Opioids, such as heroin, may cause excessive damage to the heart and lungs. Naloxone will reverse most symptoms of opioid overdosing. Clonidine alleviates often severe withdrawal from opioids. The treatment of reactions to sedative-hypnotics, volatile inhalants, phencyclidine (PCP), hallucinogens, marijuana, anabolic steroids, and contaminants in impure drugs is discussed.
