Addressing Mental Health Needs of Balkan Refugees
Article Abstract:
Most of the Bosnian refugees in the US may benefit from mental health services to help them to recover from their traumatic experiences. Psychiatrist Stevan Weine of Chicago, Ill, believes that two-thirds of the refugees have been traumatized by the war, but only about 8% seek mental health assistance. As Bosnians rely on family members for emotional support, Weine emphasizes family intervention to assist the refugees. Support groups can help strengthen bonds within and between families to ease mental distress.
