Contraception and sexually transmitted diseases: interactions and opportunities
Article Abstract:
Hormonal contraceptives used with condoms seem to offer the most efficient protection against both pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) including HIV, the virus which causes AIDS. Oral contraceptives are one of the most effective means for preventing pregnancy. Oral contraceptives seem to reduce the risks of pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) but increase the risks of contracting other STDs such as chlamydia. The mechanisms behind these differences are still unclear. The use of barrier methods such as condoms benefits both women and men. Past concerns about the increased risk of PID in women with IUDs are being reassessed. It now appears that women who are at low risk for STDs may be appropriate candidates for IUD use. Sterile technique during insertion also decreases the risk of PID in women with IUDs.

Maternal and perinatal long-chain fatty acids: possible roles in preterm birth
Article Abstract:
Preterm birth may be associated with increased levels of arachidonic acid and docosapentaenoic acid in maternal blood and placenta and abnormal maternal fatty acid metabolism. Researchers measured levels of essential fatty acids in mothers, their newborns, and placenta of 37 preterm and 34 term births. Arachidonic acid and docosapentaenoic acid levels were higher and eicosapentaenoic acid levels were lower in the blood of mothers delivered preterm. Fetuses had higher phospholipid linolenic acid levels than their mothers, suggesting maternal blood depletion of linolenic acid. Arachidonic acid may be used as a marker for preterm birth.
