Advanced practice politics and the Oregon nurses' trail
Article Abstract:
Oregon nurses played a major role in expanding the Oregon Nurse Practice Act to include advanced practice for nurse practitioners. Their efforts began in 1975 with a lobbying effort targeting local legislators. They won prescriptive authority for nurse practitioners and were active in the development and implementation of the Oregon Health Plan. In 1994 the Oregon legislature gave nurse practitioners the right to have hospital admitting privileges. The strides made in Oregon nursing policy provide a model for national health reform.

Using advanced practice to shape public policy: agenda setting
Article Abstract:
Advanced practice nurses (APN) have taken on multiple roles, and one of the most necessary is involvement in political activity to set or influence legislative agendas. Doing this effectively requires familiarity with policy procedures, how laws and regulations are made, and how a problem gets onto the agenda. This is an area where the skills developed in other APN roles of teaching, case managing, and community health work are applicable.

Establishing a nurse-managed wellness clinic in a predominantly older African American inner-city high rise: an advanced practice nursing project
Article Abstract:
An inner-city wellness clinic managed by nurses provided older African American people with care as well as teaching nursing students "culturally competent care." Sensitivity to sexes, cultures, races, and sexual orientations can be essential to good health. Cultural folk medicine beliefs, religious attitudes and other strongly held opinions can affect whether or not a person can follow or even understand medical advice.
