Advances in the Treatment of Chronic Viral Hepatitis
Article Abstract:
Chronic viral hepatitis often leads to chronic liver disease requiring transplantation, and drug therapy for the infections are only moderately effective. Hepatitis B, C, and D viruses are known to cause chronic liver disease, and treatment generally includes interferon injections for 6 months to one year, sometimes coupled with the antiviral drug ribavirin in combination therapy. The goal of treatment is the clearance of hepatitis viral RNA from the bloodstream and restoration of normal alanine aminotransferase (ALT) levels.
