Advice on when to treat a patient, report a colleague
Article Abstract:
Colleagues who discern drug- or alcohol-related illness among fellow physicians have an ethical obligation to report their observations to a physician's health program, regardless of whether that illness has manifested itself in impairment. The deleterious effects of alcohol and drug abuse often have little effect upon physician competence until late in the course of addiction, and thus colleagues are required to counteract such effects upon recognition.

Study: patient wishes ignored as death approaches
Article Abstract:
A study reveals many terminally ill patients suffer needlessly until they died because their wish to end their lives without prolonged treatment or mechanical support is denied. The study reviewed 4,301 cases over a period of two years. Part of the problem, according to the American Medical Assn, is that physicians are reluctant to end medical treatment because they are trained to extend or improve life.
