Air travel and venous thromboembolism -- is the evidence in?
Article Abstract:
A report from France shows that people who travel by air more than 3,000 miles in one trip are 150 times more likely to develop pulmonary embolism than people who fly fewer miles in one trip. Pulmonary embolism occurs when a blood clot forms in the legs and travels to the lungs. It can be prevented by drinking plenty of water, stretching the legs periodically, and avoiding alcohol consumption.

Severe pulmonary embolism associated with air travel
Article Abstract:
Airline passengers who fly more than 3,000 miles in one trip have a greater than normal risk of developing pulmonary embolism, according to a study of 135 million passengers arriving at Charles de Gaulle international airport between 1993 and 2000. Pulmonary embolism occurs when a blood clot forms in the legs and travels to the lungs, where it can cause breathing difficulty and even death.

Multidetector-row computed tomography in suspected pulmonary embolism
Article Abstract:
A study is conducted to know whether the use of D-dimer measurement and multidetector-row computed tomography (CT), without lower-limb ultrasonography, might safely rule out pulmonary embolism. The potential clinical use of a diagnostic strategy for ruling out pulmonary embolism on the basis of D-dimer testing and multidetector-row CT without lower-limb ultrasonography is indicated.
