Alcohol and economic change
Article Abstract:
Comprehensive alcohol regulation has yet to be established in Eastern and Central Europe. This has led to widespread smuggling of alcoholic beverages, low quality alcohol trading and tax evasion by importers. Alcohol-related deaths also increased between 1990 and 1993.

Alcohol problems in Russia
Article Abstract:
The Soviet Union implemented an alcohol control campaign on June 1, 1985 in efforts to decrease alcohol consumption. However, the move only succeeded in creating an underground alcohol market in Russia and raising consumption levels.

Studies show that alcoholism is increasing in Zimbabwe. Between 1990 and 1994, female secondary students drank as much as their male counterparts, while 66% of men and 48% of women who drank exhibited signs of dependence.
