Alendronate for the treatment of osteoporosis

Article Abstract:

Alendronate appears to provide superior treatment for osteoporosis. Alendronate specifically inhibits osteoclast bone resorption activity with no adverse effects on mineralization. Alendronate is permanently incorporated into bone, which means alendronate must be continuously administered. Studies show that alendronate decreases serum and urinary markers of bone resorption and increases bone density. About 4% of patients experience gastrointestinal complaints. Other adverse effects include muscle pain or cramps and rarely, rash. The effects of long-term bone accumulation must be studied.

Troglitazone is an effective oral treatment for type II diabetes. This drug lowers blood glucose levels and may enhance how insulin works. Clinical trials show troglitazone significantly reduced insulin dose, improved glucose metabolism, and increased blood pressure control. The drug is taken once a day, orally, and its relative expense suggests use for carefully defined populations.

Alprostadil for the treatment of erectile dysfunction

Article Abstract:

The drug alprostadil has been used successfully in the treatment of erectile dysfunction in elderly men. Injected alprostadil encourages erection by relaxing the trabecular smooth muscle and expanding the cavernosal arteries. Side effects of the drug include post-injection pain, prolonged erection, and in rare cases, orthostatic hypotension.
