Lymph-node dissection for gastric cancer
Article Abstract:
Extended lymph-node removal may not improve the prognosis of stomach cancer. During this procedure, more lymph nodes are removed than are removed during limited lymph-node removal. Extended lymph-node removal is used extensively in Japan, where it appears to result in higher survival rates. A 1999 Dutch study comparing extended lymph-node removal with limited lymph-node removal found that survival rates were similar but patients who had extended lymph-node removal were more likely to have complications. However, the complication rate might be less if experienced surgeons perform the surgery.

SYT-SSX gene fusion as a determinant of morphology and prognosis in synovial sarcoma
Article Abstract:
Two variants of a single gene may determine the type of synovial sarcoma and indicate probable long-term survival in patients with the soft-tissue cancer. Synovial sarcomas occur around joints and are usually found in teens and young adults. Researchers found one of two variants of the SYT-SSX fusion gene in each of 45 patients tested. Patients with the monophasic type of this cancer had the SYT-SSX2 form and significantly longer metastasis-free survival than those with the SYT-SSX1 form and biphasic synovial sarcoma.
