Effect of an Intensive Educational Program for Minority College Students and Recent Graduates on the Probability of Acceptance to Medical School
Article Abstract:
A summer educational program for minority college students might improve their chances of being accepted into medical school. Researchers analyzed the effect of the Minority Medical Education Program (MMEP) on 3,830 minority applicants to eight US medical schools in 1997. This six-week program teaches students general science as well as skills in writing, verbal reasoning, studying and test taking. Half of the students who went through the program were accepted into medical school, compared to 42% of a group of minority students who did not go through the program.

Protecting adolescents from harm: findings from the National Longitudinal Study on Adolescent Health
Article Abstract:
Data from the National Longitudinal Study on Adolescent Health reveal that there are many factors that determine whether teenagers will engage in harmful behaviors. The survey of 12,118 teenagers found that teenagers who felt close to their parents and siblings, teachers, and classmates were less likely to engage in risky behaviors. Access to guns and drugs increased their likelihood of violent behavior and drug use. Working 20 or more hours a week and appearing older than classmates were associated with emotional distress.
