An Introduction to the Hospitalist Model
Article Abstract:
Hospitalists are specialist physicians who manage the care of patients while hospitalized. Traditionally, patients are treated by their own physicians while they are in the hospital, providing continuity from outpatient care to inpatient care. However, hospital specialists may be more experienced with hospital-based treatment, may be more available to visit patients than physicians based in private offices, and may provide better inpatient treatment. The ideal application of the hospitalist model would maintain the continuity of care while providing improved inpatient treatment of patients.

The Hospitalist: A New Medical Specialty?
Article Abstract:
The evolution of the hospitalist as a medical specialty will be facilitated by the development of academic departments and training programs in inpatient medicine. Hospitalists are physicians who specialize in the treatment of hospitalized patients. Like emergency medicine, family practice, and critical care medicine, the hospitalist subspecialty has emerged from changing patterns of clinical practice. The development of hospitalist training programs, specifically designed to teach inpatient care, will solidify the hospitalist subspecialty within the practice of medicine.
