Enough sterile syringes to prevent HIV transmission among injection drug users in Montreal?
Article Abstract:
With no slowing of the spread of HIV infection among injection drug users (IDU's) in Montreal, statistics were examined to determine the efficiency and effectiveness of efforts being being made to slow the epidemic. If it is accepted that there are approximately 10,000 IDU's in Montreal, the estimate was made that some 10,683,000 syringes would be required. An audit of current efforts revealed that only 338,000 syringes had been distributed, amounting to slightly less than 5% of the number required.

"Single-use" needles and syringes for the prevention of HIV infection among injection drug users
Article Abstract:
Adaption of a "single-use" syringe might be effective in preventing the spread HIV infection through among injection drug users (IDU's) and their sex partners and children. Manufacture and distribution of a syringe which is difficult to reuse could encourage participation in a needle exchange program. This could be done with plungers or needles which become disabled after one use, or a valve which would allow loading of the syringe only one time.
