Anal squamous intraepithelial lesions: relation to HIV and human papillomavirus infection
Article Abstract:
The author points to the incidence of anal infections, particularly anal squamous intrepithelial lesions (ASIL) and high-grade ASIL (HSIL) which is held to be a cancer precursor. He notes that some 75% of the HSIL lesions do not regress during highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART), and, because HSIL is slow to progress to cancer, the effectiveness of HAART in extending the lives of HIV patients may ironically be the cause of increased rates of anal cancer. He recommends anal screening programs as cost-effective.

Self-collected versus clinician-collected anal cytology specimens to diagnose anal intraepithelial neoplasia in HIV-positive men
Article Abstract:
A study was conducted among men who have sex with (MSM) with clinician-collected anal cytology and histopathology specimens were analyzed from a cohort study of anal intraepithelial neoplasia (AIN). The sensitivity of both self-collected and clinician-collected samples to detect AIN 2 or 3 was higher among HIV-positive MSM than among HIV-negative MSM.

Detection of genetic changes in anal intgraepithelial neoplasia (AIN) of HIV-positive and HIV-negative men
Article Abstract:
Genetic changes can occur in men with a precancerous condition called anal intraepithelial neoplasia. This disease is caused by the human papillomavirus in both HIV-negative and HIV-positive men.
