Annual Deaths Attributable to Obesity in the United States
Article Abstract:
About 300,000 deaths in the US each year are caused by obesity. This was the conclusion of researchers who looked at the number of deaths reported in 6 large epidemiological studies, including the Framingham Heart Study, the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, and the Nurses' Health Study. The estimated average number of deaths caused by obesity overall was 280,184. More than 80% of these deaths occurred in people who were obese as opposed to just being overweight. Among obese non-smokers, the estimated average number of deaths was 324,940.

Garcinia cambogia (Hydroxycitric Acid) as a Potential Antiobesity Agent
Article Abstract:
The herb Garcinia cambogia is not an effective weight-loss aid. Garcinia contains hydroxycitric acid, an enzyme that inhibits fat cell production. Researchers assigned 135 obese patients to daily treatment with Garcinia or placebo for 12 weeks, in conjunction with a high-fiber, low-calorie diet. Both groups of patients lost 6-9 pounds, but there was no difference between the groups in weight loss or fat loss. Garcinia cambogia does not appear to accelerate weight loss in patients following a low-calorie diet.
