Antiretroviral Drug Resistance Testing in Adult HIV-1 Infection: Recommendations of an international AIDS Society--USA Panel
Article Abstract:
Some HIV patients should be tested to see if they have a strain of HIV that is resistant to specific AIDS drugs. This was the conclusion of a panel of 13 doctors with experience in treating HIV infection. There is no evidence to support testing all HIV patients. However, patients who do not respond to an AIDS drug should definitely be tested. Patients who have recently been infected can also be tested, since there is evidence that drug-resistant strains of the virus can be passed from one person to another.

Antiretroviral therapy for HIV infection in 1997: updated recommendations of the International AIDS Society-USA Panel
Article Abstract:
The USA Panel of the International AIDS Society has updated the recommendations for the treatment of HIV infection. Research has shown that combination drug therapy that includes a protease inhibitor can significantly reduce HIV levels in the blood. If taken very early in the infection, this could delay the progression of the disease. The drug combination should also include two reverse transcriptase inhibitors. This should be given to all HIV-positive patients with HIV RNA counts of 5,000 to 10,000 copies per milliliter regardless of their CD4 cell count.

Antiretroviral Drug Resistance Testing in Adults With HIV Infection, Part 1
Article Abstract:
Genetic testing of the virus in HIV-infected patients may be useful in guiding antiviral drug therapy to maximize effectiveness and reduce development of drug resistance. A panel of experts assembled by the International AIDS Society - USA recommends viral load and CD4+ T-cell count as immunologic guides for antiretroviral drug therapy. Poor patient compliance with treatment protocols contributes to the development of drug-resistant HIV. Resistance testing may be useful for determining the optimal drugs for use in treatment.
