Anxiety, depression, and posttraumatic stress in Iranian survivors of chemical warfare
Article Abstract:
The long-term psychological impact of chemical warfare on a civilian population was assessed among Iranian survivors of the 1980-1988 Iran-Iraq War, when extensive use of chemical weapons resulted in high rates of morbidity and mortality. It was concluded that exposure to chemical warfare is an extremely traumatic event that has long-lasting adverse consequences on mental health of survivors, as illustrated in the case of residents of Sardasht who experience symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), anxiety and depression.

Article Abstract:
A randomized controlled trial of female veterans and active-duty personnel with posttraumatic stress disorder (PSTD) was conducted to compare the effect of prolonged exposure, a cognitive behavioral therapy, with present-centered therapy, a supportive intervention, for treatment of PSTD. It was observed that prolonged exposure was more effective than present-centered therapy for treating PSTD, possible to be implemented across a range of clinical settings.
