Are managed care members satisfied?
Article Abstract:
Preliminary results of the Health Plan Employer Data and Information Set 1997 survey indicate that managed care patients are satisfied with their health care. Ninety-six percent of 3,080 surveyed Medicare patients seen in managed care plans gave a good rating to their health plan. A similar written questionnaire will be available for non-Medicare members to complete annually. Survey questions cover respondents' health, perceived need for and actual use of services, and satisfaction with service accessibility and delivery.

Protection for patients or providers?
Article Abstract:
Many patients and physicians believe that managed care organizations (MCOs) are cutting costs at the expense of patient care. They want state legislatures to pass laws regulating the industry. However, MCO executives believe physicians are simply trying to protect their turf. Some areas of discontent between both groups are physician gag rules, drive-through deliveries, any willing provider laws, direct access to specialists, physician financial incentives and disclosure requirements.

Manage authorizations to manage care
Article Abstract:
Managed care organizations (MCOs) can minimize extraneous costs by managing care authorizations. Primary care physicians often authorize care, but variations within this setup have important consequences. MCOs should have information systems that schedule and track referrals, report on quantity and quality, notice unusual situations and deny payments if usages are not authorized.
