It is vital that syringe infusion pumps are set up and used correctly, as an error can be fatal. Hospitals must limit the number of different models of pumps used, thus cutting down the risk of confusion, and care must be taken to ensure that batteries are regularly checked.

Intravenous therapy is discussed with reference to its common use and associated risks. These risks which cover four main areas such as infection control, drug interactions, incorrect use of syringe pumps and checks are presented.
