Association of an HLA-DQ allele with clinical tuberculosis
Article Abstract:
A gene may be associated with increased risk of developing tuberculosis (TB). Researchers studied genes thought to be related to TB susceptibility in 126 patients with TB and 88 healthy people in Cambodia. TB causes significant illness and death in Cambodia, and many people are exposed to the infectious bacteria. A variant of a human leukocyte antigen histocompatibility complex was discovered in 12% of TB patients and none of the healthy patients. This genetic variation may affect the immune system response to exposure to mycobacteria and influence the progression of TB.
