Associations of age, immunosuppression, and AIDS among homosexual men in the Tricontinental Seroconverter Study
Article Abstract:
Age does not appear to hasten the decline in immune function in AIDS patients but it may influence the treatment for specific complications of AIDS. Researchers periodically measured CD4+ lymphocyte counts in 376 HIV-positive men from the time of their diagnosis. There was no association between age and CD4+ lymphocyte levels or the decline in immune function. However, older men had higher CD4+ lymphocyte levels at the time they were diagnosed with Kaposi's sarcoma, indicating that they developed the tumors faster than younger men. This could have implications for prognosis and drug treatment.

Factors associated with frequent needle exchange program attendance in injection drug users in Vancouver, Canada
Article Abstract:
Needle exchange programs in Vancouver, Canada, appear to be attracting people at high risk of HIV infection. Researchers asked 89 HIV-infected and 193 non-infected Vancouver residents about risk factors and attendance at a needle exchange program. Those who attended frequently were heavy drug users who often borrowed used needles. Many used shooting galleries and had no stable housing situation. These people may be hard for traditional health clinics to reach. Consequently, needle exchange programs might try to provide links to health services for those attenders most at risk.

The Amsterdam Cohort Studies on HIV infection and AIDS
Article Abstract:
The Amsterdam Cohort Study (ACS) is a long-term research project tracking the development and progression of HIV infection and AIDS among 2400 homosexual men and intravenous drug users. Begun in 1984, the ACS provides valuable data on HIV from patients most at-risk for infection. Researchers estimate the annual cost of studying this group of men is $2 million.
