Lymphomatoid papulosis: a T-cell dyscrasia with a propensity to transform into malignant lymphoma
Article Abstract:
Patients with lymphomatoid papulosis may have a higher risk of developing malignant lymphoma than is generally thought. Lymphomatoid papulosis is a T-cell disorder characterized by multiple small skin lesions. Although a benign condition that spontaneously regresses, lymphomatoid papulosis is often misdiagnosed as a malignant, or cancerous, disease. Tissue analysis shows cell proliferation indistinguishable from malignant disorders. Researchers reviewed the medical records of 21 patients with lymphomatoid papulosis. The patients ranged in age from 14 to 77 years, and 19 of them were initially misdiagnosed as having cancer. Five of the 21 patients developed lymphoma, four of whom were younger than 45 years. This may be because younger patients were followed longer, not because their risk is higher than that of older patients. In fact, the cumulative risk of progression to malignancy was calculated to be approximately 80%, much higher than the 20% reported previously.

A multidisciplinary approach to therapy for unresectable malignant thymoma
Article Abstract:
The coordinated use of various therapies may improve the success rate in treating inoperable malignant tumors of the thymus gland. By combining the type of chemotherapy known as induction type with surgery, as well as postoperative radiation therapy and following with the chemotherapy known as consolidation type, treatment is very effective for a condition which previously had a poor prognosis. In this situation, surgical removal becomes more feasible and full recovery seems the rule rather than the exception.
