Ban genetic discrimination? Congress eyes plan to prevent denial of health insurance

Congress is considering legislation that would limit insurers' ability to deny healthcare coverage to individuals on the basis of genetic information. Insurance groups strongly oppose such legislation. A direct confrontation on the issue is bound to occur, according to the American Medical Assn's Linda Emanuel. She noted that the issue raises basic questions concerning what types of healthcare coverage are appropriate in the age of genetic medicine.

New Congress to consider expansion of health insurance

Members of the 105th Congress are preparing to renew debate on the expansion of health insurance. Pres Clinton's plan to provide financial assistance to people between jobs is expected to be at the foreground of formal debates. The program could help an estimated 3 mil people per year at an annual cost of about $2 bil. Sen Edward M. Kennedy will also introduce a bill to increase insurance access for children.

Congress at odds over managed care

Two opposing Congressional camps have formed over proposed legislation that would reform managed care practices. Opponents argue laws are not needed; proponents claim laws would set standards.
