Battle of the airways: A growing number of people with asthma are embracing the teachings of a Russian professor who believes the disease can be treated without drugs
Article Abstract:
The Buteyko method of treating asthma involves simply changing the way asthma sufferers breathe. Asthma cases have continued to rise and treatment usually involves inhalers. A new daily drug can prevent attacks but more and more people are turning to complementary medicines. The Buteyko method has been used in Russia for 15 years, and teaches people with asthma to control their breathing. Some believe it is more of a treatment for hyperventilation than asthma, and that anti-inflammatory drugs are needed for pure asthma.

Working out the asthma allergens
Article Abstract:
Occupational asthma is the largest single element of work-related respiratory disease in the UK, with an estimated 1,000 to 1,500 cases occurring each year. For nurses, occupational asthma can be triggered by exposure to a range of substances, including alginates, dressings, latex products, catheters and disinfectant. Nurses should also be aware of the need to be able to give appropriate advice to patients with asthma for whom occupational factors are significant and possibly unrecognized.
