Big rise in TB suggests return to era of the sanitarium
Article Abstract:
A rising number of tuberculosis (TB) cases has prompted discussion about the use of sanitariums in TB treatment. Between 1987 and 1992 there were 28,000 more TB cases than expected. Drug-resistant TB cases are increasing largely because of patients' failure to complete the six to nine months of drug therapy typically required to cure the disease. Some advocacy groups are uncomfortable with the idea of opening sanitariums and propose other ways to increase patient compliance. In Spring 1993 a Center for Disease Control task force will release a national action plan for controlling the disease.

Critical care
Article Abstract:
An growing number of physicians are offering their services to homeless shelters, claiming that volunteering provides them with an opportunity to rekindle the excitement of helping people in need. Most shelters have a primary care physician on duty at least once a week. On average, physicians volunteer their services three times a month. Contrary to popular belief, the homeless value good health over steady income and permanent jobs, and will even sacrifice their place in meal lines to keep medical appointments.

Long for a good laugh? You may not find it here
Article Abstract:
California Medical Association's non-profit Audio-Digest Foundation compiled 39 years' worth of warm-up jokes from medical conference lectures into three audio tapes. The tapes sell for $9.85 each, and more than 4,000 tapes have been sold. Many physicians liked the tapes, others complained about the ethnic and sexual nature of many of the jokes and the paucity of dark humor.
