Biliary sludge as a cause of acute pancreatitis
Article Abstract:
Biliary sludge may cause acute pancreatitis and increase the likelihood of recurring attacks of pancreatitis. Biliary sludge is a mixture of either calcium bilirubinate granules or cholesterol monohydrate crystals and bile found mainly in the gall bladder. A study of 86 patients with acute pancreatitis found that 31 had pancreatitis without a known cause and 21 of those had microscopic evidence of biliary sludge. Ultrasound detected biliary sludge in only 11 of these patients, and in 10, the sludge was primarily calcium bilirubinate granules. In the ten patients whose sludge was not detected by ultrasound, eight had sludge composed primarily of cholesterol monohydrate crystals. The 10 patients with sludge who had their gall bladder removed or had surgery on their gallbladder had fewer recurrences of pancreatitis.

Regression of liver fibrosis after biliary drainage in patients with chronic pancreatitis and stenosis of the common bile duct
Article Abstract:
The liver may regenerate itself after conditions that cause liver fibrosis have been corrected. This was documented in nine men who were surgically treated for obstruction of the common bile duct caused by pancreatitis. Liver biopsies taken before and after the procedure showed improvement in six patients.
