Blood in the sand
Article Abstract:
The publicity surrounding the sentences of two British nurses, convicted of murder in Saudi Arabia, has highlighted the issue of British nurses working in a country which regularly has public flogging and beheading. Royal College of Nursing advisers, and some recruiting agencies, say they advise nurses that if they work overseas they are subject to the laws of the country. However, nurses do not appear to be deterred from applying to work in Saudi Arabia. One recruitment agency reported that none of the 60 nurses preparing to work in Saudi Arabia have withdrawn as a result of the case.

A wing and a prayer
Article Abstract:
Refugee aides are concerned about UK government plans to disperse refugees to parts of the country other than London. They feel that people who are in a foreign country, and may be severely traumatized due to their experiences, need the support of experienced workers and a network of established contacts. They believe that nurses in the regions may feel ill-equipped to help people whose health problems relate to atrocities they have suffered. The Asylum Right Campaign maintains that the government plans to move 30,000 refugees out of London by Mar 2001.

Lighting-up time
Article Abstract:
The recent National No Smoking Day coincided with International Women's Day. The number of smokers in 1992 consisted of 29% of men and 28% of women. Women tend to find it harder to give up smoking as a result of the prospect of putting on weight; and the use of cigarettes to alleviate stress. A survey of female smokers aged over 60 years of age, revealed that lack of support from their families made it difficult for them to stop smoking.
