Effect of ethanol and progesterone on monoamine oxidase activity in cultured cells of human term placenta
Article Abstract:
Alcohol appears to stimulate monoamine oxidase activity in human placental cells and progesterone appears to inhibit it. Monoamine oxidase is an enzyme in the placenta that deactivates neurotransmitters. Low levels of monoamine oxidase activity have been associated with abnormalities such as diabetes in pregnancy and miscarriage. Human placental cells were successfully cultured in a laboratory. After treatment with alcohol, monoamine oxidase activity in the cultured cells increased. When the cultured placental cells were treated with progesterone dissolved in alcohol however, monoamine oxidase activity diminished. Further research is needed on the effects of alcohol and progesterone on monoamine oxidase activity in the body.

Accuracy of home pregnancy tests at the time of missed menses
Article Abstract:
In a study, it was estimated that a sensitivity of 12.5 mIU/mL was needed to detect 95% of pregnancies at the time of missing menses. Only 1of 18 home pregnancy tests (HPT) had this sensitivity. Thus, the utility of HPTs is questionable and clinicians need to be aware of the limitations of current HPT brands.
