Blues in the night

Article Abstract:

A study of 100 young student nurses concluded that night work produces symptoms of clinical depression. The nurses completed questionnaires relating to perception, personality and psychosomatic complaints before starting their first ever night duty. Completion of the same questionnaire after three months of night work revealed that 73% were depressed after the period of night work, compared to 23% before. The research may give night workers an increased understanding of their reactions, and may also indicate that a disturbance of circadian rhythms occurs in people who are depressed.
