Bone transplants: Many options for repair
Article Abstract:
Transplants involving bone are referred to as grafts, and more than 2 million bone grafts are done each year in America, to repair an injured bone due to trauma or surgery, to supplement bone healing after a fracture, and to fuse arthritic or unstable joints. If conditions allow, the best approach is autograft, by using the patients bone from a different location of the body, but besides autografts, surgeons also use other options such as structural piece of bone (allografts), demineralized bone matrix (DBM), nonbone materials and biologics.
