Breakfast omission and cognitive performance of normal, wasted and stunted schoolchildren
Article Abstract:
A study was conducted on 279 children in the age group of 8 years 7 months and 10 years 11 months from the lower socioeconomic section to assess the effects of omitting breakfast on their ability to learn. These children were studied on the basis of three variables, normal, wasted and stunted. The stunted children performed poorly, and breakfast consumption did not improve their performance. Normal children were not affected by the omission of breakfast, and those children, whose nutritional levels was low, could not reach the required standard of performance.

An experimental estimate of the maintenance energy requirement in children with cystic fibrosis
Article Abstract:
A gross energy (GE) intake of 261 kJ/kg/day is necessary to fulfill the maintenance energy requirement (MER) and avoid a negative energy balance in children suffering from cystic fibrosis (CF). The energy is used to synthesize the tissues that are catabolized during the infection. A synchronous analysis of fecal and urinary samples determined the energy intake of eight children with CF. Deltatrak Metabolic Monitor Apparent energy balance determined the resting energy expenditure (EE). The GE is 2.3 times the resting EE and the MER is unaltered by CF.

Antioxidant vitamins in hospitalized elderly patients: analysed dietary intakes and biochemical status
Article Abstract:
The intake of antioxidant vitamins especially vitamin C and E, blood vitamin C, and beta-carotene levels are low in hospitalized elderly women. Vitamin E and C intake are below two-thirds the recommended levels in 85% of the patients and 50% patients fail to meet the vitamin A recommendations. The antioxidant vitamin levels in hospitalized patients need to be increased. The actual requirements and the use of foods enriched with micronutrients to suit the taste and needs of elderly require careful evaluation.
