Brown poised to tighten grip on nurses' pay
Article Abstract:
UK Chancellor Gordon Brown has announced that pay review bodies will no longer be permitted to base their recommendations just on the recruitment and retention requirements of each profession. These bodies will now have to report to departmental ministers and take account of spending restrictions and inflation. Leaders of health unions have expressed fears that this approach will lead to Brown having greater control over nurses' pay. Brown has recently met with the Trades Union Congress to discuss the new terms of reference for the nurses' pay review body.

Nurses deserve a substantial pay award to make up for years of underpayment
Article Abstract:
It is vital that UK Health Secretary Frank Dobson gives his full backing to a fair pay award for nurses. Only in this way will be the morale of the nursing profession be revived. The government should avoid staging the nurses' pay award, as this would probably serve to further reduce the number of people apply for pre-registration places. The National Health Service requires an additional 8,000 full-time nurses to reach full staffing strength, but making a pay award will not be the only factor in improving recruitment and retention.
