US President George W. Bush renewed his push for Congress legislation that aimed at making medical liability insurance more affordable and available for physicians. Patients are directly affected in New Jersey, as physicians are unable to keep their practices open with the rising liability insurance costs along with low Health Maintenance Organization (HMO) and Medicare payments.

Tort reform bill goes to Congress

A Bipartisan coalition in the US House of Representatives introduced legislation for passing medical tort reform at the national level in the Congress in 2003, as doctors in several states in the US launched work slowdowns or other protests against increasing liability insurance rates. Physicians support the congressional measure that includes caps on noneconomic damage awards.
