CDC set to harness the predictive power of a medical family tree
Article Abstract:
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has launched a Family History Public Health Initiative that is intended to make the best possible use of medical knowledge of family history in determining a patientEs risk level. Researchers are working on a prototype computer-based survey to summarize patientEs level of risk for one or more specific diseases, and three research centers are awarded funds to put the prototype through the paces in a clinical trial.

The common methods that can help physicians considering risk communication to their patients are presented. Some of the tips mentioned include building trust and creditability by expressing empathy and caring, competence and expertise, and acknowledging uncertainty and finally telling the truth.
