Transient systolic dysfunction after relief of cardiac tamponade
Article Abstract:
Impaired function of the left ventricle of the heart may occur in some patients after cardiac tamponade. Cardiac tamponade is compression of the heart caused by effusion of the pericardial fluid in to the pericardium or by collection of blood in the heart. The pericardium is the membrane that surrounds the heart. Left ventricular dysfunction occurred after cardiac tamponade in two women with recurrent breast cancer. Neither woman had a history of left ventricular dysfunction, and both recovered without treatment over a two-week period. Left ventricular dysfunction was not a side effect of any of the anti-cancer drugs with which the two patients had been treated.

HLA-B27-associated cardiac disease
Article Abstract:
Many patients who carry the genetic marker HLA-B27 may also develop a syndrome characterized by heart and joint involvement. Studies published between 1936 and 1995 on seronegative spinal joint disease, heart disease, and the HLA-B27 region were analyzed to determine any correlations between these conditions. Up to 88% of the patients with electrical dysfunction within the heart, back flow problems from the heart, Reiter disease, or ankylosing spondylitis had the HLA-B27 marker. Involvement in both organ systems occurs in only half of the patients. Vessel development is similar in both diseased organ systems.
