Canada to reduce physician training slots in system overhaul

Article Abstract:

Canada's provincial health ministers released in Jan 1992 a 12-point plan to reduce medical costs, increase the quality of health care and more effectively meet Canada's health needs. The plan would cut medical school and residency slots by 10% and reduce immigration of foreign medical graduates. The plan would also foster the development of national medical practice guidelines and reimbursement plans other than fee-for-service. Reactions to the plan have been mixed.

Juggling act: MD, hospital chief, insurance CEO

Article Abstract:

Leo Henikoff is a physician and CEO of Rush-Presbyterian-St. Luke's Medical Center in Chicago, IL. Although the hospital is well-regarded, its health maintenance organizations and preferred provider plan have lost $35 million since 1987 because of its unprofitable emphasis on teaching and research. Henikoff favors managed competition and would like to see a managed competition law enacted. The hospital's management and history are also discussed.

States release hospital outcomes, charges; doctor data to follow

Article Abstract:

Iowa and Pennsylvania have recently released reports on hospital charges and risk-adjusted death rates. The reports are designed to enable consumers to comparison shop for healthcare. However, there is some question as to the usefulness and fairness of the reports. Some hospitals lowered their fees in anticipation of the survey. Data on individual doctors is expected to be released soon in Pennsylvania.
