A description of a patient who reported headache, stiff neck, pleuritic chest pain, and increasing myalgias in his back on the morning of admission to the hospital is given. The patient was pronounced dead and the microbiology laboratory reported the detection of influenza A antigen in a nasal swab obtained on the previous day.
