Dentists' participation in capitation and preferred provider organization dental plans
Article Abstract:
More dentists are participating in preferred provider organizations, according to a survey of 4,177 dentists. Even so, most of their patients were treated on a fee-for-service basis. Dentists who did not participate in PPOs cited concerns about costs and quality of care as reasons for not joining.

Differences in practice characteristics of capitation and PPO provider dentists
Article Abstract:
Dentists may join managed care dental insurance programs to increase their patient base. The American Dental Association surveyed approximately 3000 dentists in 1995 about participation in preferred provider (PPO), capitation, fee schedule and other managed care programs. Almost 85% of managed-care participants agreed that the plans required them to reduce their fees, reporting an average discount of 22%. Approximately half of dentists in PPO or capitation plans obtained more patients through plan participation, a primary reason for joining.
