Outcome after allogeneic bone marrow transplant for leukemia in older adults
Article Abstract:
A bone marrow transplant may be an effective treatment for leukemia patients over 40 years old who receive a donation from an HLA-identical sibling. Many hospitals will not perform bone marrow transplants on patients over 40 years old. Among 2,180 leukemia patients who received a bone marrow transplant from an HLA-identical sibling, 1,282 were between 30 and 39 years old, 527 were between 40 and 44 years old, 291 were between 45 and 49 years old and 80 were 50 years old or older. The incidence of graft-versus-host-disease (GVHD) and relapse was similar in all four age groups. Disease-free survival was also similar in all four groups. Patients between 45 and 49 years old had a slightly higher risk of developing interstitial pneumonia or of dying from treatment-related complications.

Results of transplanting bone marrow from genetically identical twins into patients with aplastic anemia
Article Abstract:
Bone marrow transplants into patients with aplastic anemia from their identical twin appears to be successful. Pre-treatment with immunosuppressive therapy may not improve survival but may improve bone marrow function. Survival rates and bone marrow function were compared in 40 patients with aplastic anemia receiving bone marrow transplants from their identical twin. Full bone marrow function was seen in 12 of 17 patients pre-treated with immunosuppressive therapy but in only seven of 23 patients not initially pre-treated. Ten-year survival rates were 70% for pre-treated patients and 87% for those not pre-treated.
