Innovation and Service Traditional at University of Michigan Medical School
Article Abstract:
Some of the research at the University of Michigan Medical Center is discussed. Founded in 1850, the school's traditional focus has been providing medical training to Michigan doctors, including women and minorities. The school was the first in the US to develop a residency program in pediatric heart surgery. The university is developing small video cameras that surgeons can wear during an operation. The images could be viewed by medical students and residents all over the world, giving them access to real-life surgery. The Medical Readiness Trainer is a virtual reality device to give students even greater experience.

Chest Physicians Explore Worldwide Use of Home Mechanical Ventilation
Article Abstract:
Doctors from all over the world discussed their experiences with patients on home ventilation at the Chest 1999 conference sponsored by the American College of Chest Physicians. Home ventilation has revolutionized the care of many children and adults with neuromuscular diseases. Up until 1990, many of these patients would have to be hospitalized on a regular basis to be placed on a ventilator. Now they can receive artificial respiration at home, usually through a catheter inserted in the nose, or through a nasal mask or mouthpiece. Japanese researchers have developed a ventilator small enough to be worn as a backpack.

Child Psychiatrists Address Problem of Youth Violence
Article Abstract:
Child psychiatrists discussed ways to reduce violence among young people at a recent meeting of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and the Canadian Academy of Child Psychiatry. Although violent crime has decreased in most parts of the country, in one study, nearly one third of the children reported seeing someone shot or stabbed. Among 13-to 18-year-old children, 2.8 million become victims of violent crime every year. An estimated 9 million children witness violence at home or at school. In a 1997 national survey, 18.3% of the children had carried a weapon to school in the preceding month.
