Injuries to preschool-age children in day-care centers: a retrospective record review
Article Abstract:
It is important to understand the nature of injuries sustained by children in day-care facilities. Researchers examined the injury logs of four day-care centers in upper Midwestern suburban areas to gather data for ascertaining the best way to calculate injury rates. They studied injuries by gender and month for 527 preschool-age children, of whom 275 had sustained one or more injuries in a 1-year period. Although the majority of these injuries were minor, they were nonetheless traumatic to the child, the caretaker and the parents. Rates of injury ranged from six to 49 per 1000 children for every 8-hour period spent in a day-care facility. Because of a lack of clarity or the absence of reporting from state to state, there was a great deal of confusion as to the actual rates. Calculation of injury rates should be based on the amount of time a child spends in a day-care setting.

Motor Vehicle Occupant Deaths Among Hispanic and Black Children and Teenagers
Article Abstract:
The motor vehicle accident death rates of Hispanic and black male teenagers (13-19 years) and children (5-12 years) have always been low because data has not been adjusted for racial differences in number of miles travelled and ownership of cars. White teens have twice the deaths of black teens, with Hispanics in between. When the figures are adjusted to reflect actual amount of time and distance spent in cars, however, Hispanic teens have the highest rate of fatality per billion miles with blacks next and then whites. In children aged 5 to 12, adjusted figures show black fatalities highest, followed by Hispanics and then whites.
