Unfavorable effects of passive smoking on aortic function in men
Article Abstract:
Both active and passive smoking appear to adversely affect the aorta, which is the major artery that distributes blood from the heart to the rest of the body. The aorta must remain elastic in order to absorb the blood from each heart contraction. Researchers used ultrasound to measure the diameter and pressure inside the aorta in 16 male non-smokers exposed to passive smoke and 32 male smokers while they smoked. The elasticity of the aorta dropped 21% in non-smokers exposed to passive smoke and 27% in smokers while they smoked. This could be one means by which smoking causes cardiovascular disease.

Protein supplements increase serum insulin-like growth factor-I levels and attenuate proximal femur bone loss in patients with recent hip fracture: a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial
Article Abstract:
Protein supplements may prevent bone loss in patients who have had a hip fracture. Researchers gave daily protein supplements or a placebo to 82 patients with a recent hip fracture. Six months later, the patients who received the supplements had higher blood levels of insulin-like growth factor-I, which is a naturally occurring protein that promotes bone and muscle strength. They also had lost less bone mass and spent less time in rehabilitation than the patients taking placebo.
