Clinical assessment of bad breath: current concepts
Article Abstract:
Bad breath may be a common and typically easy condition to identify and treat. A researcher highlighted current theories of the origins of bad breath, methods to identify this condition, and treatment options. Bad breath typically originates from bacteria growth on the back of the tongue but may also come from between the teeth, under the gum line, sinus or lung infections, smoking, dentures, tonsils, or chemical imbalances. Dentists can identify bad breath by simply smelling the patient's breath from the nose and mouth, by smelling a scraping from the back of the tongue, or by testing the breath for sulfur levels. Regular flossing, gentle brushing of the back of the tongue, drinking more water, and gargling with a mouthwash before bedtime may help improve bad breath conditions. Honest feedback from a significant person in the patient's life may also help in identifying a bad breath condition and monitoring the patient's progress.
