Flexible monitoring: bringing technology to the patient
Article Abstract:
A hospital's flexible approach to patient monitoring reduced costs while maintaining a high quality of patient care. Portable monitors taken to hospital beds saved enough funds to permit changing an intensive care unit (ICU) to an intermediate care unit while permitting round-the-clock surveillance at any location. This model also decreased return ICU admissions and capital acquisition costs while increasing staff efficiency.

The Carondelet experience
Article Abstract:
Nurses, physicians, and patients' families instituted several programs at Carondelet St. Mary's Hospital in southern Arizona to monitor the need for acute care services. In 1989, nurses negotiated a contract for services to aged persons. Establishment of this nursing health maintenance organization lowered hospital costs, readmissions, and reduced admissions for intensive care.
