Coalition wants tobacco regulated as a drug
Article Abstract:
In a letter to George Bush, a coalition of health groups demands regulation of tobacco as a drug and government efforts to prevent smoking. The groups joining the coalition include the American Heart Association, the American Cancer Society and the American Lung Association. Legislation to accomplish these purposes has been introduced in Congress by Mike Synar and Jeff Bingaman, but political analysts do not expect the president to favor such regulation of the tobacco industry.

Advocates tell Congress: tobacco control is 'pro-family.' (anti-tobacco groups use Republican buzzwords)
Article Abstract:
The American Medical Assn and other anti-tobacco groups are fighting the pro-tobacco groups with Republican jargon, stating that the public does not accept a pro-family stance that includes the use of tobacco. Republicans have stated that it will not further investigate whether tobacco is a drug, as the Democrats did through a House Energy and Commerce health subcommittee, but Democrats are saying that a tight regulation of tobacco falls under pro-family issues.

Article Abstract:
The tobacco industry is fighting in Arkansas, Massachusetts and Nebraska against referendums that would approve an increase of 25 cents per pack in the cigarette tax. Proceeds will help finance antismoking education and health care for those who cannot afford it. The tobacco industry is suing in Colorado and Oregon to keep the issue off the ballot.
