Survival after the age of 80 in the United States, Sweden, France, England, and Japan
Article Abstract:
Life expectancy for people over 80-years-old is longer among white people in the United States than people in Japan, Sweden, France, and England. Researchers analyzed death certificates of whites in the US and people in Japan, Sweden, France, and England. The mortality data was on people born between 1880 and 1894. In 1987, the average life expectancy for 80-year-old women was 9.1 years (yr) in the US, 8.5 yr in Japan, 8.3 yr in Sweden, 8.6 yr in France, and 8.1 yr in England. For men the average life expectancy was 7.0 yr in the US, 6.9 yr in Japan, 6.5 yr in Sweden, 6.7 yr in France, and 6.2 yr in England. The longer survival of elderly in the US may be caused by greater expenditure on their health care. Their longer survival may also be due to a tendency of American elderly people to be well-educated, to be immigrants, to have survived through ages with higher mortality, or to have had better health at earlier ages.

A comparison of dietary trends among racial and socioeconomic groups in the United States
Article Abstract:
The diet of many Americans appears to have improved since the mid-1960s. In 1965, whites in high income groups had worse diets than whites in low income groups and blacks in low income groups, according to the Nationwide Food Consumption Surveys. However, the 1988-1991 Continuing Survey of Food Intake by Individuals revealed that healthy diets were followed by 19.9% of low-income whites, 23.5% of low-income blacks and 20% of high-income whites. All three groups have lowered their fat consumption and blacks have increased their intake of fruits and vegetables.
