Clostridial infection of a locally recurrent renal cell carcinoma with sepsis
Article Abstract:
Malignancy is associated with infection of the blood by clostridial bacteria. Clostridial bacteria are anaerobes, microorganisms that can live and grow in the absence of oxygen, and rarely cause abscesses or lesions in the kidney. However, the development of anaerobic abscesses in kidney tumors have been reported recently. A case is described of a 51-year-old man with a bacterial infection of the blood (sepsis) resulting from Clostridium perfringens infection of a recurrent tumor. The decaying tumor had developed four months after the removal of the kidneys for kidney cell carcinoma. The infection of the blood may have resulted from the spreading of the tumor in the kidney to the gut, or may have occurred during colonoscopy (the internal examination of the intestines). Patients with large, decaying tumors who must undergo examination of the gastrointestinal or urinary tracts may have an increased risk of infection by microorganisms from the bowel. Lesions infected with clostridial bacteria and accompanying infection of the blood occur under these conditions, and can be treated with antibiotics. Surgery to remove the infected tumor is essential and should be performed promptly. (Consumer Summary produced by Reliance Medical Information, Inc.)

The influence of rice bran on plasma lipids and lipoproteins in human volunteers
Article Abstract:
A 15 grams/day diet of rice bran lowered plasma triglyceride concentrations in normocholesterolaemic men compared to a similar diet composed of wheat bran. The dietary supplements did not affect plasma total cholesterol, low density lipoprotein and high density lipoprotein cholesterol, apoprotein AI and B concentrations and body weight. These results show that reasonable amounts of rice bran exert no lowering effect on plasma total cholesterol.
